Acupuncture & IVF / Embryo Transfer

Exciting new research showing potential benefits of "menstrual cycle based acupuncture" treatment combined with IVF/ET.  Compared to the control group those treated with acupuncture showed an increase in the number of eggs retrieved, fertiization rates, number of quality embryos, estrogen levels and improved implantation rates.

Acupuncature was given two times a week until egg retrieval for around 14-17 sessions.  After the series acupuncture treatments patients had their embryo transfer.  The control group received no acupuncture.  Compared to the control group the acupuncure group showed and increase in estrogen, antral follicle count, eggs retireved, number of high quality embryos, and fertilization.  This study begins to demonstrate how this menstrual cycle based acupucnture treamtnet can help improve ovarian reserve in women with deminished ovarian reserve, leading to an improvement in clinical pregnancy rates.  

While this study shows that there is an improvement for patients with decreased ovarian reserve, I believe that would aslo likely apply to women who have low follicle quality or responsiveness as well.  From clinical experience I know that each patient and couple is different and responses vary as well, but this research is both exciting and promising when aiming to study and asses the benefits of acupuncture for fertility, IVF, and embryo transfers.
